2. When was the Flag Tower of Hanoi built?
The history of the Hanoi Flag Tower dates back to the Nguyen Dynasty, when Emperor Gia Long ascended to the throne in 1802 to unify what is now modern Vietnam. The tower’s construction began in 1805 and was completed after five years.
During the French colonial period, the French army destroyed most of the Imperial Citadel’s structures, save for the tower to be used as a military post. In 1945, after the triumph of the August Revolution, the Vietnamese national flag was raised on the flagpole for the first time.
